Proposed Old Growth Order
The proposed order establishing non-spatial old growth objectives
will legally establish old growth objectives for landscape units
across the province of British Columbia. The order will apply to the
approximately two-thirds of the province where objectives for old
growth have not already been formally established.
The intent of the order is to clarify the amount of area
available for timber harvesting by confirming the area of old forest
that will be conserved to address biodiversity values.
It is proposed that the Minister of Sustainable Resource
Management make the final order under Section 4 of the Forest
Practices Code of British Columbia Act. The proposed order will be
available for public review and comment until January 9, 2004. The
final order will be prepared after considering public comments and
is intended to take effect on or about January 31, 2004.
The order is primarily concerned with the management of forest
resources on Crown land, and will apply to Forest Development Plans
prepared under the Forest Practices Code of British Columbia Act and
to Forest Stewardship Plans prepared under the Forest and Range
Practices Act. Private land outside of a Tree Farm Licence will not
