Proposed Old Growth Order

The proposed order establishing non-spatial old growth objectives will legally establish old growth objectives for landscape units across the province of British Columbia. The order will apply to the approximately two-thirds of the province where objectives for old growth have not already been formally established.

The intent of the order is to clarify the amount of area available for timber harvesting by confirming the area of old forest that will be conserved to address biodiversity values.

It is proposed that the Minister of Sustainable Resource Management make the final order under Section 4 of the Forest Practices Code of British Columbia Act. The proposed order will be available for public review and comment until January 9, 2004. The final order will be prepared after considering public comments and is intended to take effect on or about January 31, 2004.

The order is primarily concerned with the management of forest resources on Crown land, and will apply to Forest Development Plans prepared under the Forest Practices Code of British Columbia Act and to Forest Stewardship Plans prepared under the Forest and Range Practices Act. Private land outside of a Tree Farm Licence will not be affected.
